23-year-old Boko Haram fighter surrenders with AK-47 in Borno
A 23-year-old suspected Boko Haram fighter, identified as Ali Saidiq, has surrendered to Nigerian troops in Borno State, handing over an AK-47 rifle and 26 rounds of ammunition in what security sources described as another sign of mounting pressure on insurgents operating around the Lake Chad axis.

Saidiq, a native of Garere in Kukawa Local Government Area, reportedly surrendered on Thursday during a stop-and-search operation at the Kwatan Alkama checkpoint.
The operation was carried out by troops of the 196 Amphibious Battalion in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Brigade Lake Chad.
Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post on X, citing security sources familiar with the incident.
According to the sources, Saidiq voluntarily surrendered an AK-47 rifle marked with registration number 02657, together with a magazine containing 26 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition.
Why he surrendered
Preliminary intelligence gathered after his surrender suggested that the young man abandoned the insurgency following sustained military pressure against terrorist elements operating in the area.

His decision to surrender comes amid intensified military operations aimed at disrupting insurgent networks, restricting their movement and weakening their ability to operate across communities around the Lake Chad basin.
For the military, such defections are considered significant not only because they remove personnel and weapons from terrorist groups, but also because they can provide intelligence about the structure and activities of insurgent networks.
Now in military custody
Saidiq has been taken into military custody for profiling and further investigation.
Authorities are expected to establish his specific role within the terrorist organisation, determine how long he had been involved, trace his operational activities and investigate possible links to other members of the network.
The recovered AK-47 and ammunition have also been secured as the investigation continues.

While one surrender does not by itself signal the collapse of Boko Haram's operational network, military authorities regard such developments as an indication that sustained pressure can weaken both the fighting capacity and morale of terrorist elements in the Lake Chad region.
