Prince Harry and Meghan to move back to UK with their children
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are preparing for a major change in family life, with reports confirming that they plan to move back to the United Kingdom later this month after more than six years in the United States.
The couple are expected to establish a private, non-royal home outside London, where they will live with their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five. The children are reportedly set to begin at a British school in September.
The development marks the Sussexes' most significant return to British life since they stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 and subsequently settled in California.
No return to royal duties
Despite the family's move, Harry and Meghan are not expected to resume their former roles as working members of the Royal Family.
They will continue to live as private individuals, while their new British base will remain separate from official royal residences. Reports also indicate that the family will retain their homes in California and Portugal.
King Charles was reportedly informed of the relocation plans on Sunday. The development comes only weeks after Harry, Meghan and their children visited the King at his Highgrove home in July.
Interestingly, the proposed move was not discussed during that meeting, according to reports. The recent reunion was nevertheless significant, with the visit giving Charles an opportunity to spend time with Archie and Lilibet after a prolonged period of family separation.
From royal exit to California
Harry and Meghan's return represents a striking reversal of the direction their lives took in early 2020.
The couple stepped back from royal duties in January that year, seeking greater financial independence and a life away from the intense scrutiny that accompanied their position within the Royal Family.
They eventually settled in Montecito, California, where they built a new life around commercial ventures, charitable work and media projects.
Harry subsequently released his memoir Spare, while the couple also produced projects for Netflix and became increasingly outspoken about their experiences within the monarchy. Their public revelations contributed to already strained relations with some members of the Royal Family, particularly Prince William.
A different kind of homecoming
The planned relocation does not represent a return to royal life. Instead, it appears to be a move towards maintaining a private family life in Britain while continuing their independent work.
Harry is expected to maintain his involvement with UK-based charitable causes, while Meghan will continue her business activities from Britain.
The couple's decision also places their children at the centre of this new chapter. Archie was born in London in 2019, but Lilibet was born in California in 2021, after the family had already left Britain. Both children will now experience British schooling for the first time.
For Harry, the move brings him physically closer to his father and the country where he was raised. For Meghan, it marks a return to Britain after years of establishing a life across the Atlantic.
And for the Sussex family as a whole, the decision could prove to be one of the clearest signs yet that their relationship with Britain—and with the Royal Family—is entering a new phase.
The move has been reported by several major outlets, including Reuters, the BBC and the Associated Press, although Buckingham Palace has not formally commented.
