South African midfielder, Jayden Adams dies after World Cup exit

South African football is mourning the death of midfielder Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25, just weeks after representing the country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to reports, the talented midfielder passed away under circumstances that have not yet been disclosed.

Adams, who played for Mamelodi Sundowns, made three appearances for South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Bafana Bafana exited the tournament in the Round of 32 following a defeat to Canada.

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) described Adams' death as a devastating loss to the country's football community.

In a statement, the union said the midfielder had proudly represented South Africa on football's biggest stage and described his passing as an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs and supporters.

"South African football has lost a gifted player whose future held immense promise. May his soul rest in peace," the statement read.

In a separate tribute shared on X, SAFPU said Adams' legacy would endure through his humility, exceptional talent and the pride with which he represented South Africa.

Adams joined Mamelodi Sundowns from his boyhood club, Stellenbosch FC, last summer and quickly established himself as an important figure for both club and country. Since making his senior debut for Bafana Bafana in 2024, he had become a regular member of the national team.

Only weeks before his death, Adams celebrated his participation at the FIFA World Cup by posting a photograph of himself holding the tournament trophy on Instagram with the caption: "Proud moment!"

His partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, had also praised his dedication ahead of South Africa's World Cup clash against Canada, saying his years of hard work had finally been rewarded with the opportunity to perform on football's biggest stage.

Tributes continue to pour in from across the football world as teammates, fans and the wider sporting community remember Adams for his talent, professionalism and contribution to South African football.
