Pakistani national arrested for overstaying in north Cyprus without a residence permit

Lefkosia, August 5, 2025 — A Pakistani national, was arrested in the Walled City of Nicosia after police discovered he had been residing in the country without a valid residence permit for 140 days.

He has been remanded in custody for three days pending further investigation.

According to police testimony presented in court, the suspect AUR was identified during a routine patrol by the Judicial Branch teams at approximately 12:17 a.m. on August 4, 2025. Upon conducting an immigration check, officers confirmed that AUR had overstayed his legal period of residence, with his permit expiring on March 17, 2025.

Police stated that the suspect was apprehended on the spot and that formal procedures for his deportation have been initiated. Authorities are currently awaiting a response to their correspondence regarding his removal from the country.

Arguing that the suspect may continue to reside illegally if released and that there were outstanding witness statements to be collected, police requested that he remain in custody for an additional three days.

After evaluating the evidence, the judge granted the request and ordered that the suspect be held for three days as investigations continue.
