Man tried to sell property belonging to another in north Cyprus using fake power of attorney
Lefkoşa, August 5, 2025 — A man has been arrested in Lefkoşa after allegedly attempting to sell an apartment that did not belong to him using a forged power of attorney.
The suspect, identified as AT, was brought before the court on Monday, where he denied all charges but was ordered to remain in police custody for two days pending further investigation.
According to testimony presented in court by police, the incident dates back to July 8, 2025. The suspect is accused of arranging for the preparation of a fraudulent power of attorney, falsely claiming the authority to sell an apartment located in Ortaköy — a property he allegedly knew was not his. The document was then passed on to a third party as part of a transaction intended to settle personal debts.
Police began investigating the matter following a formal complaint lodged on July 29. A warrant for AT’s arrest was issued the same day, and he was apprehended on August 4 in Lefkoşa.
During police questioning, the suspect reportedly claimed that the apartment involved in the transaction was, in fact, a different property which he owned. He has denied any wrongdoing.
The police told the court that AT’s statement would be further investigated and that the authenticity of the power of attorney is currently undergoing expert forensic analysis. The prosecution requested that the suspect be remanded in custody for 48 hours to allow the investigation to proceed.
The judge granted the request, ordering AT to remain in detention for two days.
The investigation is ongoing.
