Turkish man sentenced to two years imprisonent for falsifying travel documents just to be with his African girlfriend in Cyprus
Things we do for love? A Turkish man has been sentenced to two years in prison by a North Cyprus court for falsifying documents that allowed him to return to the TRNC after he was initially deported, just to be with his African girlfriend.
According to report, Ayhan Demirci, who was deported from the TRNC on August, 4, for residing illegally in the island, returned to the island with his uncle's identity 12 days later on August 16, to be with his foreign national girlfriend.
Demirci first entered the TRNC two years ago and worked as a blacksmith in Güzelyurt but became an illegal immigrant when his boss failed to get him a work visa.
Demirci, who did not want to leave his foreign national girlfriend alone in TRNC returned to the country using a fake document.
Demirci reportedly put his own photograph on an identity card belonging to his uncle, Salih Demirci and returned to the TRNC on 16 August 2017.
He was later arrested in Güzelyurt on September, 6 and sent to prison until he was tried by a Girne court.
According to investigation by the police, the accused entered the TRNC using the Girne port and got a 90 days visa with a fake ID
Demirci was charged for obtaining fake document, impersonation, and obtaining money by fraud ".
When he was questioned by the court, Demirci said he did it because of his university student girlfriend.
According to him, his girlfriend was distraught after he was deported and that ‘she was going to commit suicide if he didn’t return, that’s why he came back’.
The judge said Demirci's crime of ‘falsifying a document’ carried a sentence of up to 10 years.
He was sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment after he was found guilty of ‘falsifying a document’, ‘impersonation’, and ‘entering the TRNC illegally’ at the criminal court in Kyrenia.
