Obama meets with Duterte in Vientiane after insult
Politics: US President Barack Obama and
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte met briefly on Wednesday and exchanged
pleasantries, after a meeting between the two
leaders on the side-lines of the summit was cancelled due to Duterte's remarks.
President Obama and Duterte were scheduled to meet one-on-one on Tuesday on the sidelines of the regional summit of global leaders hosted by the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Vientiane, Laos.
Obama cancelled the meeting following Duterte's ''son of a bitch'' comment when he warned him and other world leaders against questioning his bloody anti-drug campaign."
Philippine officials says Obama and Duterte shook hands and talked briefly before attending a gala dinner at the summit.
"They met at the holding room. They were the last persons to leave the holding room," Philippine Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay said adding that both countries' relationship was "firm, very strong."
