Atiku, too old to contest an election in 2027– Fayose
Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has questioned the suitability of Atiku Abubakar to contest the 2027 presidential election, arguing that the ADC presidential candidate is now too old for another bid.
Fayose made the remarks during an appearance on TVC’s Politics Tonight, where he compared Atiku's political situation with that of former United States President Joe Biden.
According to him, while Atiku remains a “good man”, his age could work against his presidential ambition.
“Atiku is now really old. He’s a good man, but time has caught up with him. Atiku contesting an election is like calling Biden to come and contest again.”
Fayose further argued that the 2027 election could represent the final presidential opportunity for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Atiku and Peter Obi, regardless of their respective political platforms.
“Let me say this again: President Bola Tinubu, Atiku and Peter Obi, this is their last chance of contesting an election. The three of them.”
Fayose questions Amaechi’s support base
The former governor also took aim at Rotimi Amaechi, Atiku's running mate, predicting that the former Rivers State governor could struggle to mobilise sufficient support in the South-South.
Fayose pointed to what he described as weak structures within the ADC and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), arguing that the parties have yet to establish a strong grassroots presence in the region.
“In Rivers State, during this election, Amaechi will have very little support. Even the party is not together. Most of these ADC and Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, members are not on ground. Nobody is connected to those parties yet.”
His comments add another layer to the growing political debate around the 2027 presidential contest, with questions over age, party structures, regional support and the strength of emerging political alliances increasingly featuring in discussions ahead of the election.
