Stop building unnecessary flyovers, Tinubu tells governors

Nigeria: President Bola Tinubu has challenged state governors to rethink their spending priorities, urging them to put Nigeria’s newly increased federal allocations into roads and infrastructure that can reach underserved communities rather than constructing flyovers in areas where traffic does not justify them.

Tinubu made the call on Thursday while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers from Oyo State, led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, who visited the Presidential Villa to commend the Federal Government over the rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.

The President said the states were now receiving significantly more money from the Federation Account than in previous years, creating an opportunity for governors to deliver infrastructure with a direct impact on ordinary Nigerians.

He said:

“The cost of operation is high. But the money that I’m pushing to the states, if you had it during your own time, or during my time, it would have been different.

“They are taking four to five times their money. Nobody is borrowing money to pay salaries now. Pensioners are receiving their pay.

“They should do more instead of building flying over where there is no numeric traffic; build roads and artery networks to really enhance the quality of life and the accessibility of the security agencies to penetrate those areas.”

The President’s argument tied infrastructure spending directly to national security, particularly in rural communities where poor road networks can slow the movement of security personnel and emergency responders.
