No other billionaire’s child has made a name like me: Davido

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has offered a fresh perspective on his rise to fame, arguing that his journey is unusual because he managed to establish himself in the entertainment industry despite being born into immense wealth.

Speaking on the Vibe Podcast, the singer reflected on the kind of success stories Africans typically celebrate — particularly tales of people who rise from poverty to prominence. For Davido, however, his story represents a different kind of struggle: proving himself in an industry where his family name and financial background could easily have overshadowed his talent.

The singer, whose father is billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, said he believes few children of billionaires have managed to build a global identity and fortune of their own on the scale he has.

“Africans usually like the grass to grace story, the young boy that was poor and became rich.. but not to brag, which other billionaire’s child do you know in the world, I am not talking about Africa that has made a name for himself and also made a lot of money? You can’t name one apart from me.”

Davido has previously spoken about the unusual position his background placed him in when he began pursuing music. In a 2024 interview, he said his wealth was initially one of the biggest obstacles to gaining acceptance in the music industry, insisting that his success ultimately came down to his talent and personal values rather than his family’s fortune.

“There are many billionaires in Nigeria, even richer than my father… And there are people [billionaire’s children] who have tried to do what I have tried to do: music, entertainment, business. But mine has been successful because of my values,” he said at the time.

His comments also echo an earlier account of his upbringing. Davido previously revealed that he did not fully understand the extent of his father’s wealth until he was about 13, describing his father’s lifestyle as relatively modest despite his billionaire status. He later became the first member of his family to seriously pursue entertainment, rather than following the more conventional path expected of him.

That decision eventually turned Davido into one of Africa’s most recognisable music exports, giving him a career that exists independently of the Adeleke family fortune.

For the singer, therefore, the defining feature of his story is not that he came from wealth, but that he refused to let that wealth become the entirety of his identity. His argument is that building a name, a music catalogue and a business empire from an already privileged starting point still required him to prove that he could succeed on his own terms.
