A fatal police shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, has triggered protests and renewed debate over the use of force by law enforcement after bystander videos of the incident spread widely across social media.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday as officers attempted to arrest a man in his 30s during a struggle on a street corner. Authorities said the confrontation escalated after the suspect allegedly produced a knife, prompting one officer to open fire.

According to Madison Police Chief John Patterson, officers initially responded to reports of a man suspected of checking parked vehicles in the city's Marquette neighbourhood. When they approached him, the man fled on a bicycle before officers caught up with him roughly 30 minutes later.

Patterson said a physical struggle broke out after the man either fell from or was removed from the bicycle by officers.

During the confrontation, the man allegedly resisted arrest and produced what police described as a large fixed-blade knife, injuring the officer who later fired the fatal shots.

The police chief said another officer also sustained injuries, while a Taser deployed during the encounter failed to subdue the suspect.

"The officer who fired his weapon had suffered injuries from a large, fixed-blade knife that the man had pulled out or produced while officers were attempting to take him into custody," Patterson said.

Viral videos fuel public outrage

Videos recorded by bystanders and shared online captured part of the struggle, showing four officers wrestling with the man as witnesses shouted, "Let go" and "He's got a knife."

One officer can be heard shouting "Taser" moments before the suspect was forced to the ground. Seconds later, another officer fired what appeared to be three gunshots.

Chief Patterson said his preliminary review also indicated that a single officer discharged three rounds. However, he cautioned against drawing conclusions based solely on the circulating videos.

"The video presents one perspective of the incident. It is not a full overview of everything that was visible from different angles," he said.

Race becomes central to debate

Although police have not disclosed the identity or race of the deceased, footage shared online suggested the man was a person of colour, while the four officers involved appeared to be white.

The advocacy group Urban Triage identified the deceased as a Black man and condemned the shooting in a social media post.

"Madison Police shot another Black man. We need all eyes on Madison police. We keep us safe," the organisation wrote.

The incident has reignited concerns over policing and race in the United States, where several high-profile fatal encounters involving Black individuals have prompted nationwide calls for police reform in recent years.

Officers placed on leave

The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case and will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

Meanwhile, all four officers involved have been placed on administrative leave in line with department policy.

Asked whether the incident appeared to involve excessive use of force, Patterson declined to speculate, saying investigators would determine whether officers acted within the law after reviewing all available evidence.

Following the shooting, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Madison, marching toward the Wisconsin State Capitol to demand accountability and transparency as the investigation gets underway.
