British woman jailed six years in Hong Kong for blackmail over false rape claim

A Hong Kong court has sentenced a 26-year-old British woman, Isabel Rose, to six years in prison after finding her guilty of blackmailing a British banker by threatening him with a false rape allegation.

Rose, from Hackney in east London, was convicted following a six-day trial in which prosecutors argued that she fabricated the accusation to extort up to £100,000 from the man.

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, District Judge Adriana Tse described Rose's actions as "wicked" and said she had shown "no remorse" throughout the proceedings.

The judge also found the complainant's testimony to be credible, stating that the banker had been an "honest, credible and reliable witness" whose account was supported by the evidence presented in court.

Relationship turned into criminal case

According to the prosecution, Rose travelled to Hong Kong in early 2024 to meet the banker after the pair had previously become acquainted while travelling in Thailand.

She later reported him to police, accusing him of rape, leading to his arrest. However, investigators subsequently released the banker without charge.

Prosecutors told the court that Rose used the allegation as leverage to pressure the man into making substantial payments.

Messages presented as evidence

During the trial, the court reviewed WhatsApp conversations between the two.

In one exchange, the banker apologised, saying he had been drinking and believed he had misunderstood Rose's intentions.

Evidence showed that he initially transferred £5,000, followed by another £5,000 after Rose said the money was needed to cover travel, accommodation and medical expenses.

The court heard that Rose later demanded £100,000, allegedly threatening to report him to police if he refused to pay.

Judge Tse concluded that Rose had deliberately manipulated the banker, exploited his feelings for financial gain and knowingly made a false allegation that resulted in his arrest.

The court found her guilty on the blackmail charges beyond reasonable doubt.

Following the conviction, Rose was sentenced to six years' imprisonment, bringing the high-profile case to a close.
