Iran launches new attacks on US targets as Strait of Hormuz crisis escalates
Iran launched fresh missile and drone attacks on United States military facilities across the Middle East on Friday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Tehran and Washington as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to deepen.
According to Reuters, the latest strikes targeted US military installations in Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, while Iran also claimed to have attacked what it described as a US special forces base in Syria.
The attacks came after the United States expanded its military campaign against Iran, carrying out fresh strikes on strategic infrastructure, including bridges and an airport in southern Iran, following days of sustained aerial bombardment.
The conflict has intensified concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes. Iran has maintained restrictions on the waterway, while the United States has reinforced its military presence in the area to safeguard commercial shipping.
The worsening security situation has disrupted global energy markets, with oil prices rising amid fears of prolonged supply disruptions. Shipping activity through the strategic waterway has also been affected as regional tensions continue to mount.
Despite the escalation, diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict remain underway. Regional mediators, including Pakistan, Qatar and Egypt, are reportedly continuing backchannel talks in an attempt to revive negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
The latest exchange of attacks underscores the growing risk of a broader regional conflict, with both sides warning of further military action if hostilities continue.
