How to start an Akara business and cost in Nigeria in 2026
Akara, the popular deep-fried bean cake widely sold across streets and markets in Nigeria, remains one of the country's most affordable food businesses. However, the cost of setting up even a modest roadside operation has increased significantly due to rising prices of essential items.
According to a report by BusinessDay, a commercial-sized frying pan costs about N12,000, while a 12.5kg gas cylinder sells for approximately N45,000. An initial gas refill adds another N18,750.
The report also noted that 10 litres of groundnut oil, used for frying, currently costs around N21,000.
The largest startup expense is beans, with half a bag estimated at N65,000. A roadside umbrella for shade costs about N25,000, while a table and bench set is priced at approximately N19,000.
Other essential items, including bowls, sieves, a frying skimmer, scooping spoon, mixing utensils, packaging materials, and ingredients such as pepper, onions and salt, vary in price depending on quality and supplier.
Analysts advised intending entrepreneurs to set aside additional working capital to cover the cost of restocking ingredients during the first few weeks of operation.
The core ingredients required for the business include beans, groundnut oil, pepper, onions, salt and water, while the basic equipment consists of a frying pan, gas cylinder and burner, cooking gas, bowls, sieves, frying skimmer, scooping spoon, table and bench, roadside umbrella and packaging materials.
The akara business is suitable for both individual entrepreneurs and family-run operations, with the roadside umbrella and bench setup remaining the most common model adopted by street vendors.
Experts also noted that startup costs can be reduced by purchasing fairly used equipment or buying beans in bulk through cooperative arrangements with other traders.
