72-year-old man dies after he was swept away by flood in Agbor Delta State

A 72-year-old man, Sunday Aimiyekagbon, has died after he was swept away by floodwaters in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, along Imudia Street, off Charles Street, while the deceased was reportedly returning home on his motorcycle.

Residents said heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to rise rapidly, making the road impassable. The elderly man was said to have been overwhelmed by the strong current before being swept away.

His body was later recovered after a search by residents.

Speaking after the incident, his son, Ambrose Aimiyekagbon, described the loss as devastating and appealed to the relevant authorities to provide a lasting solution to the recurring flooding in the area.

Residents also called on the Delta State Government and the Ika South Local Government Council to improve drainage infrastructure and clear blocked waterways to prevent similar incidents.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over the persistent flooding in Agbor, which residents say continues to claim lives and destroy property whenever heavy rainfall occurs.
