Burkina Faso releases detained Nigerian aircraft and crew members

Burkina Faso has freed the Nigerian Air Force aircraft along with its 11 crew members, bringing an end to their detention following a precautionary landing in the country.

The NAF C-130 aircraft was en route to Portugal on a ferry mission when it developed technical faults and was forced to land in Bobo Dioulasso about two weeks ago.

According to the Nigerian Air Force, the crew diverted to the closest airport to ensure safety and comply with international aviation procedures.

NAF Director of Public Relations, Mr. Ehimen Ejodame, explained that the decision to land was taken strictly in line with global aviation safety protocols.

Despite this, Mali’s junta leader, Assimi Goita, speaking on behalf of the Confederation of Sahel States, described the landing as an “unfriendly act carried out in defiance of international law.” He also issued a warning that Sahel States would take action against any aircraft deemed to have violated their airspace.

Following diplomatic engagements, the Nigerian government confirmed that both the aircraft and its personnel had been released.

The breakthrough came after talks in Ouagadougou between a Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yusuf Tuggar, and Burkina Faso’s leader, Mr. Ibrahim Traoré.

Confirming the development on Wednesday night, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said: “Yes, they have been released.”
