Efforts taken to increase student numbers, decisions taken to prevent deportation-related problems: North Cyprus Minister of Education

Efforts are been undertaken to increase the number of students coming to northern Cyprus for education as well as decisions to prevent deportation-related problems, said Minister of national Education, Nazım Çavuşoğlu.

Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Çavuşoğlu stated that higher education policy in the country cannot be shaped by the wishes of “interest groups,” stressing that the sector will continue to be structured under the authority of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council (YÖDAK).

Taking the floor to respond to remarks during parliamentary discussions, Çavuşoğlu stressed that higher education in the country cannot be shaped by the demands of “interest groups,” but will instead be governed under the frameworks of YÖK and YÖDAK. He noted that the Higher Education Strategic Action Plan was prepared during his term.

Criticizing universities for being “indifferent and ineffective,” Çavuşoğlu said that the Universities Union has failed to convene even among its own members. “During our term, no day-to-day decisions have been taken in higher education,” he said, adding that the relevant efforts would be completed and calling on universities to contribute constructively.

Çavuşoğlu reiterated that inspections would continue, stating that while expansion initiatives are supported, efficiency is expected. Emphasizing that universities have never been neglected by the state, he pointed to efforts undertaken to increase student numbers and strengthen the sector.

On the issue of opening new departments and faculties, Çavuşoğlu said that YÖK requires institutions to fully meet established criteria. He also noted that meetings had been held with police, university administrators and the Migration Authority regarding immigration procedures, and that decisions were taken to prevent deportation-related problems.

The minister announced that 43 educational institutions have had their authority to issue residence confirmations revoked. He said inspection measures had been tightened under the coordination of the Ministry of Interior in order to prevent allegations of human trafficking.

Addressing private school fees, the minister said the ministry does not have the authority to intervene in tuition charges. He added that earthquake strengthening works and infrastructure deficiencies would be resolved within the next two years.
