Hospital cashier accused of embezzling patient’s surgery fee in north Cyprus

Lefkoşa – A hospital cashier has been accused of diverting part of a patient’s surgery payment into his personal possession instead of the hospital account.

The suspect, identified as K.Ö., appeared before the Lefkoşa District Court on Satruday Sept. 20 on charges of theft by servant.

The police testified in court that the incident took place in September 2025 at a private hospital where the suspect was employed as a cashier.

According to the investigation, a patient’s surgery fee of ₺140,000 was partially processed. While ₺100,000 was reportedly collected by credit card, hospital management later discovered through checks on the hospital’s POS machines that the amount had not been transferred to the company’s account.

Following a complaint, police launched an inquiry and arrested the suspect on September 19, 2025. Investigators determined that the cashier had allegedly taken the payment in cash and kept it for himself while making it appear as though the money had been processed by credit card.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted, “For the past two and a half to three years, I have been taking payments in cash, making it look like they were charged to a credit card, and keeping the money for myself.”

Police stated that further witness statements need to be collected and security camera footage reviewed. They requested the suspect’s continued detention for investigative purposes.

He was ordered to remain in custody for three days.
