Hitman caught in north Cyprus admits plot to kill businessman
Lefkoşa – A man has confessed to arriving in North Cyprus with the intention of assassinating a businessman, according to police testimony presented in court.
The suspect identified as OG, who was allegedly sent from Turkey for the mission, has been remanded in custody for three days as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police told the court that the suspect was charged in connection with the offense of illegal possession and transportation of a firearm and explosives following his arrest on 19 September 2025 in Demirhan, Lefkoşa.
According to police, officers acting on intelligence stopped and searched OG, finding a silver-colored Beretta 7.65mm pistol with a wooden grip inside a black backpack, along with seven rounds of ammunition. The firearm and bullets were seized as evidence, and the suspect was arrested on the spot.
During interrogation, OG allegedly admitted that he had traveled from Istanbul to North Cyprus with the purpose of killing a businessman. He reportedly gave a voluntary statement, confessing that the firearm had been hidden at a location previously sent to him via photo and GPS coordinates, which he later retrieved.
Police stated that the firearm will be examined by the Police General Directorate’s Forensic Division to determine whether it has been used in any crimes. They also emphasized that the case has caused public outrage, noting that the investigation is still at an early stage, with additional witness statements and security camera footage yet to be reviewed. Authorities added that more suspects may be identified and further arrests are likely.
Appearing in court, OG told the judge that he had “explained everything to the police.”
After evaluating the evidence, the judge ordered the suspect to remain in custody for three days to assist the ongoing investigation.
