Suspect caught with 45 grams of cannabis and over £3,900
Lefkosa, Cyprus – A man identified as Y.O.M. was brought before a court in Lefkosia following his arrest in connection with drug possession offences.
During a hearing held on Sunday, Police Officer Celal Durukan presented details of the incident to the court. According to Durukan, the suspect was apprehended on the evening of July 13, 2024, at approximately 9:00 PM, by officers from the Anti-Crime Department during an operation on Hafız Cemal Lokman Hekim Street in the Ortaköy district.
A search conducted on the suspect and the vehicle he was operating led to the discovery of approximately 45 grams of a substance believed to be cannabis. In addition, authorities seized a total of 20,295 Turkish Lira and 3,960 British Pounds, all of which were taken as evidence.
Durukan informed the court that Y.O.M. was arrested at the scene and an official investigation has since been launched. While the suspect did not provide a voluntary statement, he is reported to have made certain declarations during initial questioning.
The police stated that further investigations are ongoing, including the collection of witness statements, review of CCTV footage, and efforts to trace the origin of the drugs. The seized substance will also be sent for laboratory analysis.
In light of the ongoing investigation, the police requested an extension of the suspect’s detention. After evaluating the testimony, Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç approved the request and ordered that the suspect remain in custody for an additional three days.
