Man sentenced to one month in prison for killing a cat in Northern Cyprus

Yarköy, Cyprus – Muhammet Sağban, who sparked public outrage after capturing and killing a pet cat using an illegal trap, has been sentenced to one month in prison following a court ruling.

The incident, which took place in Yarköy in November 2023, came to light after Sağban shared images of the act on his personal social media account. The graphic content quickly spread online, drawing widespread condemnation and demands for justice from across the country.

Despite attempting to defend his actions amid mounting backlash, Sağban was ultimately found guilty and sentenced to one month in prison.

Animal rights groups have welcomed the ruling, calling it a step forward in the fight against animal cruelty.

In a statement, the Golden Paws Association (Altın Patiler Derneği) emphasized the symbolic importance of the court's decision: “This incident sparked public outrage, with thousands demanding justice. Finally, he has faced trial and received a prison sentence. While we do not consider the punishment sufficient, what offers some relief is the fact that perpetrators of such violence will now face much harsher penalties. Under the new Penal Code, similar offenses will carry significantly heavier consequences. Offenders will be held accountable with more deterrent sentences. But we will never forget — and we will not let others forget — Muhammet Sağban. No one who harms animals will ever find a place in society’s conscience. This case will stand as a symbol of our ongoing fight against violence toward animals. This is not just a court decision; it is a call to action: we will not stop until all violence against animals ends.”

The case has reignited calls for stronger animal protection laws and increased enforcement, as advocates continue to push for a justice system that reflects the severity of such acts.
