Student remanded for drug possession in Lefkosia
Lefkosia, Cyprus – A man arrested in Lefkosia for drug possession has been remanded in custody for three days pending further investigation.
The suspect, identified as YOM, a Nigerian, appeared before the Lefkosia District Court following his arrest in connection with a narcotics offence.
Presenting the case in court, the police stated that on July 13, 2024, at approximately 9:00 PM, officers from the Anti-Crime Department conducted an operation on Hafız Cemal Lokman Hekim Street in the Ortaköy area. The suspect was stopped and searched, along with the vehicle he was operating.
During the search, police discovered approximately 45 grams of a substance believed to be cannabis, along with 20,295 Turkish Lira and 3,960 British Pounds. All items were seized as evidence. The suspect was arrested at the scene on suspicion of illegal drug possession, and an official investigation was initiated.
According to police testimony, the suspect did not provide a voluntary statement but made certain declarations during initial questioning. Authorities also stated that there are additional witness statements to be collected and CCTV footage that requires review. An investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the drugs, and the seized substance will be sent for forensic analysis.
Based on the evidence presented, the prosecution requested an extension of the suspect’s detention to allow for the continuation of investigative procedures.
After reviewing the case, the judge ordered that the suspect remain in police custody for a further three days.
