Suspect caught in possession of cannabis in Lefkoşa

A suspect accused of possessing illegal drugs, was brought before a court in Lefkoşa following an operation by the Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Directorate.

The police stated that on July 14, 2025, authorities received intelligence indicating the presence of a suspicious package in Lefkoşa. Upon investigation, a transparent nylon bag containing approximately 28 grams of a substance believed to be cannabis (Cannabis indica) was discovered and seized as evidence.

According to police findings, the suspect, A.A.M., reportedly came to the location to retrieve the drugs. However, upon realizing that he had been spotted by a bystander, he allegedly discarded the package and fled the scene.

The police confirmed that A.A.M.’s identity was swiftly established. He was located the same day in Gönyeli and arrested under a detention order.

The officer further noted that the investigation is ongoing, with additional witness statements to be taken and security camera footage to be reviewed. Authorities are also working to determine the source of the narcotics. The seized substance has been sent for laboratory analysis.

Based on the evidence presented, the judge ordered that the suspect remain in custody for an additional three days to allow for further investigation.
