Northern Cyprus banns outdoor work under extreme heat until July 27

Lefkosia, Cyprus — In response to the ongoing extreme heatwave, the north Cyprus Ministry of Labour and Social Security has announced a temporary ban on outdoor work during peak midday hours.

From July 24 to July 27, 2025, working under direct sunlight between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. will be strictly prohibited across the country.

The long-anticipated decision—first brought to public attention by Kıbrıs Postası—comes following warnings from the Meteorology Department regarding dangerously high temperatures.

According to the Ministry, the measure has been implemented under Article 36 of the Labour Law No. 22/1992, and aims to protect workers from severe health risks associated with extreme heat exposure.

The ban specifically applies to continuous outdoor labor under direct sunlight. However, for agricultural and construction work carried out in non-residential areas, employers are allowed to adjust start times. For example, early morning operations will be permitted for the delivery of materials such as aggregate, ready-mix concrete, and machinery to construction sites.

The Ministry has also urged employers and employees to take all necessary precautions against the heat and to prioritize worker safety during this period.
