Guard at SOS children’s village in north Cyprus arrested for alleged sexual abuse of minor

A security guard at SOS Children’s Village in Lefkoşa has been arrested on charges of “sexual harassment of a child” and “sexual assault and harassment of a child under protection.”

The suspect, identified as H.G., was brought before the Lefkoşa District Court on Tuesday July 1, where police detailed the allegations.

According to police testimony, the suspect allegedly committed sexual harassment and assault against a 14-year-old child in February 2025 while working as a guard at SOS Children’s Village. Furthermore, on June 25, 2025, the suspect is accused of sending sexually explicit messages to the child’s Instagram account.

Police reported that the incident came to light when the child’s sibling discovered the messages and informed the SOS mother. Following this report, H.G. was located and arrested in Famagusta on June 28.

Investigators stated that the child’s testimony was taken in the presence of social services, and an official investigation was launched. During questioning, the suspect admitted to sending the inappropriate messages while under the influence of alcohol.

Police confirmed that H.G.’s computer was seized, and security camera footage from SOS Children’s Village was collected as evidence. Authorities also plan to conduct forensic examinations on both the suspect’s and the child’s mobile phones.

Additionally, police noted that the suspect would undergo a medical evaluation at Barış Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital to determine whether he has any psychosexual disorders.

Investigators said they have so far collected eight statements but emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with more evidence to be analyzed and further testimonies required. The police requested an eight-day extension for H.G.’s detention to complete the investigation.

After considering the evidence presented, the judge ordered that the suspect remain in custody for an additional eight days.
