Attempted murder in Lefkoşa: Elderly man stabs victim over ex-girlfriend’s marriage plans

A shocking incident unfolded in Lefkoşa, where an 80-year-old man allegedly attempted to murder a 56-year-old man, reportedly driven by jealousy over the victim’s plans to marry his ex-girlfriend.

The suspect, Tahsin Karagözlü, was brought before the Lefkoşa District Court on Wednesday July, 2 and ordered to remain in police custody for two days as the investigation continues.

Police told the court that the suspect has been arrested on charges of “Attempted Premeditated Murder,” “Serious Assault,” and “Illegal Possession of a Knife.”

According to the police report, the incident occurred around 8:00 PM on Tuesday July 1 on Şht. Mustafa Akdeniz Street in Lefkoşa. A heated argument broke out between the suspect and the victim, identified as Ö.K. (56), allegedly stemming from jealousy over the victim’s relationship with Karagözlü’s former partner. During the altercation, Karagözlü reportedly stabbed the victim in the left chest and underarm with a knife he was carrying illegally, causing severe injuries.

Victim Remains in Critical Condition

The victim was rushed to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Lefkoşa, where he is under observation in the Cardiovascular Surgery Department. Police confirmed that the victim’s condition remains life-threatening.

The suspect was arrested under a detention order issued by the Lefkoşa District Court. During a search of his residence between 2:10 and 2:25 AM on the same day, police recovered the knife used in the attack, which was found in a kitchen cabinet and seized as evidence.

The police informed the court that Karagözlü has given a voluntary confession and emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages. Several witness statements need to be collected, and security camera footage must be reviewed. He argued that releasing the suspect at this stage could negatively affect the investigation and requested an additional two-day detention period.

After considering the testimony presented, the judge granted the request, ordering the suspect to remain in custody for two more days to allow the investigation to proceed.
