Uzbekistan qualifies for FIFA World Cup for the first time in history

Uzbekistan has secured a historic place at the FIFA World Cup, qualifying for the 2026 tournament for the first time ever.

The breakthrough came after a 0-0 draw against the United Arab Emirates on June 5 in Abu Dhabi.

This momentous achievement ends decades of heartbreak for the Central Asian nation, which had fallen short in seven previous World Cup qualification campaigns. Notable disappointments included a narrow away-goals loss to Bahrain in 2006 and a penalty shootout exit against Jordan in 2014.

Goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov played a pivotal role in the qualification-clinching match, delivering crucial saves to preserve the point needed to advance. Manchester City’s Abdukodir Khusanov also stood out in defense, contributing to a resilient team performance.

Uzbekistan now joins a growing list of 48 teams that will take part in the expanded 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Other qualified nations include tournament co-hosts and traditional football powerhouses such as Japan, Argentina, Iran, and New Zealand.

The qualification has triggered nationwide celebrations in Uzbekistan, where football fans have long dreamed of seeing their country on the sport’s grandest stage.
