Tottenham sacks Ange Postecoglou despite Europa League win

Tottenham Hotspur have parted ways with manager Ange Postecoglou, despite the Australian leading the club to Europa League glory and ending a 17-year wait for silverware.

Spurs defeated Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao on May 21, fulfilling Postecoglou's assertion that he "always wins trophies in his second season" at the clubs he manages.

However, a dismal domestic campaign saw Tottenham finish 17th in the Premier League, recording a club-worst 22 defeats in a single season.

The club also exited both domestic cups early—losing to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semifinals and being eliminated by Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round.

In a statement released Friday, Tottenham said:
"Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.

We are deeply appreciative of Ange’s dedication and impact over his two seasons with us. He will be remembered as just the third manager in our history to win a European trophy, joining club legends Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.

However, the Board has unanimously decided that a change in leadership is in the Club's best interest."

Postecoglou took charge in June 2023, guiding Spurs to a fifth-place Premier League finish and Europa League qualification in his debut season. But his second year proved far more challenging, with a severe injury crisis midseason derailing their campaign and straining his rapport with the fanbase.
