There will be no illegal students or workers in TRNC, 7,000 individuals deported in recent month: Prime minister Ünal Üstel
Lefkoşa, 1 June 2025 — Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has outlined the government's key achievements over the past three years and emphasized the administration’s continued focus on public welfare, security, and the fight against irregular migration.
Speaking in a public address, Üstel underlined the importance of technology-driven security reforms and close cooperation with Turkey in ensuring a safer and more stable Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Reflecting on over three years of governance under the tripartite coalition, Üstel said, “When we set out, our roadmap was our government program. Over time, I contributed with complementary ideas to enhance our collective vision.” He stressed that the government’s central mission has been improving citizens’ quality of life, bolstering economic vitality, and maintaining public order.
7,000 Individuals Deported Amid Crackdown on Irregular Migration
A key focus of Üstel’s remarks was the government's intensified efforts to combat irregular migration. He revealed that approximately 7,000 individuals have been deported in recent months, with many others facing legal consequences for involvement in unauthorized activities.
“The fight against irregular migration is not merely a legal issue, but a matter of public safety,” Üstel stated. He drew attention to the recent launch of the Irregular Migration Control and Migration Management Center, inaugurated alongside Turkey’s Minister of the Interior, Ali Yerlikaya. This center, according to Üstel, symbolizes a critical investment in the country’s technological capacity to monitor and manage migration effectively.
Migration Monitoring Enhanced with New Technology
Üstel noted that the center will be equipped with advanced surveillance and detection systems, allowing for real-time identification of unauthorized individuals both at entry points and within the country. “In the information age, the chances of success in any effort lacking technological support are minimal. That’s why we have operationalized this center,” he explained.
The Prime Minister emphasized that migration must be regulated and that all foreign nationals—whether students or workers—must be properly registered and engaged in lawful activity. “There will be no illegal students or workers. A student must be at school; a worker must be on the job,” he said firmly.
Security Measures in Line with International Standards
Highlighting the TRNC’s strategic location and economic draw—particularly through higher education and tourism—Üstel acknowledged that increased human mobility also brings risks. However, he assured the public that collaboration with Turkey has enabled advanced screening of individuals entering the country. “Thanks to system integration with our motherland Turkey, individuals with criminal records or high-risk profiles can be identified upon arrival,” he said.
Üstel also expressed his vision for the TRNC to become the most peaceful and secure country in the Middle East. “Our goal is to bring back the days when people could sleep with their doors and windows open,” he added.
“A Safer, Stronger Future”
Reiterating the government’s ongoing commitment to public welfare, Üstel concluded, “The peace, prosperity, and security of our people are our top priorities. With the steps we’ve taken, I have no doubt that we will all witness a safer, stronger, and more prosperous TRNC in the years ahead.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks come as the government continues to prioritize security, stability, and modernization as the cornerstones of its policy agenda.
