Student arrested for driving without license and insurance after causing accident found to be living illegally in north Cyprus
The suspect, identified only as BOS, a foreign student in north Cyprus appeared in court for the second time on Wednesday June 11 following the incident that took place on the morning of June 8, 2025, at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Atatürk Street in Gönyeli.
According to police testimony, the suspect was driving a vehicle in a careless manner and without a valid driver’s license or insurance. He reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and crashed into an electricity pole owned by the Electricity Authority.
During the investigation, authorities discovered that the registered owner of the vehicle had left the country on December 7, 2023.
The police confirmed that BOS had no driver’s license and had been residing in the country without legal status since November 2024.
The crash rendered the electricity pole and its cables unusable, with damage assessment efforts currently ongoing.
Police stated that the investigative phase, during which the suspect could influence the outcome, has been completed. Due to the suspect's lack of legal status in the country, they requested his detention until trial.
The presiding judge reviewed the evidence and ordered that the suspect be held in custody for a period not exceeding 10 days.
