Man arrested in Gönyeli for stealing cash from a lost wallet
Gönyeli, 17 June 2025 — A man accused of stealing cash from a wallet lost in Gönyeli has been released on bail, following a court hearing at the Lefkoşa District Court.
The suspect, MB, was arrested on charges of “theft by finding” after allegedly taking €50 and 4,330 Turkish Lira from a wallet dropped by an individual identified as N.R. The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of 16 June 2025 at approximately 8:30 PM.
Presenting the case in court, the police stated that N.R. had reported the lost wallet to Gönyeli Police Station the same day, noting that they had last used it at Kiler 2 supermarket. A subsequent review of surveillance footage and witness testimonies led police to identify a suspect vehicle at the scene. Further investigation revealed that the suspect who picked up the wallet was MB.
MB was arrested in Gönyeli on 17 June 2025 under a detention order issued by the Lefkoşa District Court. A search was also conducted at his residence with a warrant from the court, but the stolen cash—€50 and 4,330 TL—was not recovered.
According to police testimony, MB was formally charged but did not accept the allegations. The investigating officer confirmed that the investigation has concluded and noted that the suspect is a citizen of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Based on this, the prosecution requested the court to grant bail.
After reviewing the testimony, the judge ordered the suspect to be released on a personal bail of 50,000 TL.
