Man arrested for illegal stay in Northern Cyprus following his father’s tip-off

A Turkmen national residing illegally in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has been arrested after his father notified the police.

The individual identified only as AD, from Turkmenistan, who was found to have overstayed his permit in northern Cyprus was arrested and taken into custody over the weekend.

He was brought before a Lefkosia court on Monday June 23 on charges of unlawful residency. During the hearing, the police stated that on June 22, 2025, at around 9:00 a.m., a 58-year-old man, identified as D.D., came to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Lefkosia Police Directorate and reported that his son, AD, did not have a valid legal status in the TRNC.

Following this information, police located AD in the Göçmenköy area on the same day. A subsequent immigration check revealed that he had been residing in the country without legal permission since March 30, 2025 — a total of 84 days.

Police confirmed that AD was arrested, and an investigation into his case was launched. Authorities also noted that official correspondence related to his deportation is underway and requested three additional days of detention to complete the necessary procedures.

The judge granted the request, ordering AD to remain in custody for three more days.
