Two convicted of human trafficking in North Cyprus: Sentenced to one year in prison

Lefkoşa, North Cyprus – Two men convicted of human trafficking for attempting to smuggle seven Syrian nationals into South Cyprus via the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have been sentenced to one year in prison.

The ruling was delivered by the Lefkoşa High Criminal Court on Thursday May 22.

Reading the court decision, the judge underscored the severity of the crime and the necessity for deterrent sentencing in cases that endanger public safety and cause widespread concern.

Highlighting that human trafficking carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years under TRNC law and is classified as a serious criminal offense, the court emphasized the growing global prevalence of such crimes. The judge noted that many individuals, particularly those fleeing conflict zones, seek passage through North Cyprus as a gateway to South Cyprus and the European Union.

The court found that the defendants were part of an organized operation in September 2023 that facilitated the illegal transit of seven Syrian nationals.

The judge also pointed out the involvement of two other individuals believed to have orchestrated the broader smuggling scheme.

Taking into account both mitigating and aggravating factors, the court unanimously sentenced each defendant to one year of imprisonment.

The ruling is being viewed as a strong statement against human trafficking networks exploiting the island’s divided status and geographic position.
