Turkish Cypriots allegedly caught stealing cattle in the south

Dhekelia, Cyprus — A group of Turkish Cypriots was reportedly caught attempting to steal livestock from an animal pen in the village of Xylofagou in south Cyprus on Saturday night.

According to a report by Greek Cypriot newspaper Haravgi, they were subsequently taken to the Dhekelia British Sovereign Base police station for investigation.

The report is based on a statement issued by the Greek Cypriot group “United Cypriot Hunters Movement,” which claimed that the suspects were apprehended by local residents during the attempted theft. The group further alleged that the individuals in question are linked to other similar criminal activities, including thefts involving hunting dogs, vehicles, and vehicle parts in the Paphos and Limassol regions.

The suspects are expected to appear before the British Sovereign Base Area (SBA) military court, the statement added.

In a letter to the Cyprus Police General Directorate, the United Cypriot Hunters Movement called for efforts to resolve dozens of unsolved theft cases believed to be connected.

Online news outlets reported that the suspects, believed to be three in total, were identified as Turkish Cypriots. Two were reportedly caught in the act by local citizens, while a third suspect, who managed to flee the scene, was later apprehended by British SBA police and taken to the Deryneia Police Station for questioning.

During the interrogation, members of the United Cypriot Hunters Movement staged a protest outside the station, expressing their frustration over the incident and urging authorities to take firm action.
