Fire breaks out on student bus on Girne-Lefkoşa highway — No injuries reported

Girne — A bus traveling on the Girne–Lefkoşa main road carrying students from Girne Tourism Vocational High School caught fire near the Boğazköy Junction on Monday morning. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

According to a statement from the Police Press Office, the fire occurred at around 11:00 a.m. near the Boğazköy Junction, as the bus driven by Şevket Debreli — was traveling towards Lefkoşa.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in the bus’s left interior systems, which led to flames erupting while the vehicle was in motion.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and extinguished the blaze. However, the damage to the vehicle was extensive. The fire completely destroyed a three-meter section of the roof and 25 seats, while 22 additional seats were partially burned. The intense heat also caused the rear window and three side windows to shatter, rendering the interior largely unusable.

Emergency response teams acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all passengers, including a group of high school students. All were safely evacuated from the bus before the flames spread.

Police have launched an ongoing investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
