Student arrested in Lefkosia for residing illegally in north Cyprus

A foreign national has been arrested in Lefkosia for residing in north Cyprus without authorization for 1,047 days. 

The individual, was brought before the court on Thursday May 15.

During the hearing at the Lefkosia District Court, the Police prosecutor stated that the suspect was identified by patrolling police officers at around 7:30 PM on Wednesday May 14 while she was walking along Mehmet Emin Street in Lefkosia. 

Upon checking her identity, it was determined that she had been living in the country illegally since February 7, 2022.

Police confirmed that an investigation was launched following her arrest. Authorities are now working to determine where and under what conditions she lived during her unauthorized stay, and whether she was involved in any criminal activity. Deportation procedures have also been initiated.

The judge ruled that the suspect remain in custody for two more days to allow the investigation to proceed.

Officials emphasized that inspections and enforcement efforts against illegal residence will continue.
