Man with history of domestic violence arrested for assaulting wife over alcohol money

GİRNE A man has been arrested and charged after physically assaulting his wife for refusing to give him money to buy alcohol.

The suspect, identified as U.D., also displayed aggressive and disruptive behavior while in police custody, prompting further charges of public drunkenness, disturbance, and disorderly conduct.

According to testimony delivered in court by the Police, the incident occurred on April 29, 2025, at around 4:00 PM in Girne when U.D. allegedly struck his wife multiple times on her back, right leg, and various parts of her body using his hands and feet, following an argument over money intended for alcohol.

Following his arrest and appearance at the Girne Criminal Investigation Department, U.D. became verbally aggressive when asked to submit to a breathalyzer test. Police reported that he shouted, “Who do you think you are? I’m not blowing. I’m leaving. I’m not guilty. You can’t arrest me,” before striking cabinet doors with his hand and continuing to cause a disturbance.

U.D. refused to provide a breath sample and was arrested using reasonable force. He was charged with Assault, Domestic Violence, Public Drunkenness, Disturbance, and Improper Conduct. On April 30, he was formally served with the charges but did not accept them.

Police investigations also uncovered a history of similar incidents. Records show that U.D. was previously involved in three other cases of domestic violence against his wife, occurring on October 27, 2019, and September 17, 2020, in Lefkoşa, and on November 30, 2024, in Lapta. In each case, no legal action was taken as the victim declined to file a formal complaint or give a statement.

The police confirmed that the investigation into the suspect’s actions had concluded and requested that he be released under strict bail conditions.

The presiding judge granted the request, ordering that U.D. be prohibited from leaving the country, report to the police twice weekly, and sign a personal bail bond in the amount of 1 million Turkish Lira.
