Car rams into Liverpool title celebrations; One arrested

A car drove into a crowd of Liverpool fans during a parade celebrating the team’s Premier League title on Monday, prompting police to arrest a 53-year-old local man shortly afterward.

Merseyside Police reported that several pedestrians were struck after Liverpool's players and coaching staff traveled through the city centre on an open-top bus for the victory parade.

“We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area,” the police said in a statement. “Extensive enquiries are ongoing to determine the events that led to the collision.”

Unverified videos on social media showed people lying injured on the road, while a Reuters photographer witnessed emergency workers placing victims on stretchers and transporting them to ambulances. Debris was scattered across the street, and a temporary tent was erected at the scene.

Police urged the public to avoid speculation. “We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident,” they said.

One video appeared to show the car speeding toward the crowd, briefly swerving away from the densest group of fans. Officers quickly surrounded the vehicle, while other clips showed angry spectators attempting to confront the driver.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as “appalling” in a post on X, stating he was receiving updates. “My thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident,” he wrote.

Liverpool FC also responded via social media, confirming contact with authorities. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident,” the club said.
