Man sentenced to 10 years in prison in Russia for fraud found in northern Cyprus
A fugitive who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for fraud in Russia, has been located and arrested in Northern Cyprus.
Authorities confirmed that the individual, originally from Kazakhstan, had been residing in the island since 2017.
According to police reports, a formal notice from the General Directorate of Police dated April 22, 2025, revealed that the individual named only as A.D. was involved in a series of fraud-related crimes in Russia between December 3, 2012, and October 16, 2017. The Nizhny Novgorod City Court subsequently sentenced him to 10 years in prison, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The same document indicated that A.D. entered Northern Cyprus on September 26, 2017. Following this discovery, Turkish judicial authorities submitted a formal request to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) for A.D.'s extradition under the bilateral Extradition of Criminals Agreement.
A.D. was apprehended by police in Girne on April 25. Appearing before the court, police officer Umut Beyazlar requested that the suspect be held in custody for up to 30 days while extradition procedures are finalized.
