Incoming United Nations chief appoints Nigeria’s Amina Mohammed Deputy Secretary-General

The incoming United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres who will takes over as the UN chief from South Korean, Ban Ki-moon on January 1, 2017, on Thursday announced Nigeria's minister of environment, Amina Mohammed as his deputy secretary-general and Brazilian diplomat Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti as chef de cabinet.

Guterres who made the announcement through the spokesman of the Secretary-General, Mr Stephane Dujarric said his top team will all be female following his promise to make the women gender his top priority.  

He also appointed former South Korean diplomat Kyung-wha Kang as special adviser on policy.
Before Mrs Mohammed's appointment as the Nigerian minister of environment in 2015 by the present administration of president Buhari, she was a special adviser on post-2015 development planning to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
