I can stop supporting Obi – Isaac Fayose responds to backlash over meeting Seyi Tinubu

Businessman and social commentator Isaac Fayose has responded to the backlash that followed his recent meeting with Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that his personal relationships should not be confused with his political stance.

The controversy erupted after photos and videos of Fayose with Seyi Tinubu and socialite Cubana Chief Priest surfaced online, prompting some supporters to accuse him of abandoning his support for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Reacting in a video, Fayose said spending time with Seyi Tinubu did not change his political position.

"We spoke about a lot of things. Seyi Tinubu walked me to my car and we prayed for his father, President Bola Tinubu, and we also prayed for ourselves. Does praying for the President mean I have joined APC?" he asked.

He maintained that political differences should not destroy personal relationships, adding that Nigerians must learn to separate friendship from politics.

Fayose also reaffirmed his support for Peter Obi, stressing that he remains loyal to the former Anambra State governor despite meeting with members of the Tinubu family.

"I am 101 per cent Obidient. Right there in front of Seyi Tinubu and Cubana Chief Priest, I told them Peter Obi will win the next election," he said.

Dismissing claims that he had been compromised, Fayose insisted that his opinions were not for sale and that no one had paid him to change his political position.

“I’ve Been Seeing A Lot Of Nigerians Claiming That I Met With Seyi Tinubu And Was Bribed With Money And Dollars.

I Launched Six Estates This Year Alone, Worth Over ₦19 Billion, Without Any Government Funding. I Also Own Cars Worth Billions. If I Wanted Properties, I Could Get Them From Wike If I Chose To.

Even Before That Prayer, I Made It Clear That Peter Obi Is My Preferred Candidate And That I Will Vote For Him. That Doesn’t Mean I Have To Be Fighting Tinubu,” he said.

He added that despite openly backing Peter Obi and campaigning for him, Obi has never personally acknowledged or appreciated his support, making it unfair for people to dictate who he can or cannot associate with.

“It will not be well with you guys!!! Has Obi visited me since I started campaigning for him?”, he said.

Fayose insisted that meeting Seyi Tinubu should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any political party, stressing that he has the right to associate with anyone regardless of political affiliation.

“I can withdraw my support for Peter Obi. Do you people know how much I spent on Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign? I met Seyi Tinubu and people started complaining. Has Peter Obi ever appreciated me? If I want, I can start campaigning for President Tinubu. I’m a Yoruba man, and I love President Tinubu and his son.”

However, he also cautioned supporters against believing any politician owns their loyalty indefinitely.

"I can stop supporting Obi tomorrow if I want to. Nobody can force me to support anybody. I support people based on my conviction, not because anyone is threatening or insulting me," he said.

He added, "If Peter Obi does something I don't like, I will say it. If Tinubu does something good, I will also say it. That is how democracy works."

Fayose concluded by urging Nigerians to embrace issue-based politics rather than attacking people over differing political associations, insisting that friendship and respect should exist regardless of political affiliation.
