Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, big winners at 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards

Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga swept to victory at the MTV European Music Awards in Rotterdam, on Sunday but the Canadian sensation edged out Lady Gaga as the biggest winner of the night, taking home three awards on the back of support from his fans, in a ceremony that paid tribute to late music icon Prince.

Bieber, who was nominated in five categories, won the awards for Biggest (Most) Fans, his third in a row, Best Canadian Act, and beating British singer Adele to Best Song for hit track ''Sorry'' while Gaga who was his closest rival took home the Best Female and Best Look.

Bieber however lost out to Shawn Mendes in the best male category whilst Dutch DJ Martin Garrix went home with two awards including the Best Electro Act and Best World Stage seeing off Brits Tinie Tempah, Ellie Goulding and Duran Duran.

Adele left empty despite being nominated for three awards including Best Female. Also failing to win any award is Beyonce, who was nominated in five categories and beaten to best video by The Weekend for Starboy which features Daft Punk.
 
Drake was awarded the Best hip hop act whilst American rock stalwarts Green Day were handed the global icon prize for their contribution to music.
 
During the event, ceremony host Bebe Rexha revealed the EMA trophies had been turned purple in memory of late pop star, Prince, who died in April,

Late Prince was honored at the event.
