Turkey debunked claims that some Nigerian students schooling in Turkey are under custody

The Turkish Embassy to Nigeria has debunked claims making the rounds that some Nigerian students schooling in Turkey were arrested and are under custody in connection to the attempted failed coup carried out by a section of the Turkish military on July 7, allegedly sponsored by a popular Islamic cleric, Fethuller Gullen.

Turkish ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Cakil, on Saturday released a statement  saying;

“Regarding the news in the media about the detention of Nigerian students in Turkey, the embassy wishes to bring the following information to the attention of the esteemed Nigerian media.

There are no Nigerian students under custody in Turkey" he added.

According to Cakil, the four Nigerians who were deported on Friday last week were not students, adding that they were arrested for entering the country illegally through the Turkish-Syrian border.

Cakil said the message has been communicated to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
