South African students clash with police in violent protest

South Africa: Students in South Africa on Monday clashed with police during a demonstration in which they were demanding for free education from administrators and the government.

Police fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon at the students as the clash turns violent.

According to reports, students from one of the country's top universities were reportedly throwing stones at the security forces.

Witnesses said gun shots and stun grenades were heard as police tried to clear demonstrators from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
According to the university also known as Wits, it said at least two people were arrested and some minor injuries reported.

South Africa's Minister of Education, Blade Nzimande in a statement appealed to the protesting students to embrace dialogue and also condemned the violence, saying that the university's efforts to carry on with its academic program were being "held at ransom by irresponsible and disrespectful striking students".
