The general was also known by the name Goobaanle.

Farah said the suspected car bomb hit the vehicle in which the general was travelling on.

The attack comes 24 hours after Somali and African Union forces recaptured El Wak after it was briefly seized by al Shabaab militant group.

The group has increased its attacks in a bid to disrupt parliamentary and presidential elections next month.
