Dangote Group debunks viral post claiming Aliko Dangote endorsed Peter Obi
The conglomerate described the claim as "fake news" and urged members of the public to disregard the misleading post, which circulated widely on social media.
The post, shared by an X account identified as Mayor of Calabar (@Uno_009), alleged that Dangote had said: "Peter Obi can bring out the fortunes of Nigeria and make people recognise us around the world. Both in education, healthcare and most especially prudence in governance."
Responding through its official social media platforms on Sunday, Dangote Industries overlaid the circulating quote with a bold "FAKE NEWS" label, making it clear that the statement did not originate from the billionaire businessman.
Viral claim sparks reaction
Before it was debunked, the post had attracted significant engagement, garnering more than 246,000 views, 3,100 reposts and 9,500 likes.
The incident highlights the growing trend of using the identities of prominent public figures to amplify politically sensitive content on social media, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
No political endorsement
Dangote, founder and chairman of the Dangote Group, has not publicly endorsed any presidential candidate or political party in relation to the 2027 elections.
The company's swift rebuttal underscores its commitment to protecting its corporate reputation and preventing the misuse of its chairman's name in political discourse.
It also serves as a reminder for social media users to verify information from credible sources before sharing posts, particularly those claiming endorsements by prominent business or political figures.
Peter Obi's political ambition
Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election after emerging as the party's sole aspirant at a special national convention in Abuja.
Obi accepted the nomination, pledging to pursue policies centred on national renewal, improved security and economic transformation.
He previously contested the 2023 presidential election as the Labour Party candidate, finishing third in the official results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His campaign attracted widespread support, particularly among young Nigerians, through the "Obidient" movement.
Growing concern over online misinformation
The incident underscores the increasing challenge posed by misinformation and false endorsements on social media, particularly during election periods.
Analysts say the rapid spread of unverified political claims can mislead the public, damage reputations and influence public perception, reinforcing the need for individuals and organisations to verify information before sharing it online.
