24 killed, 91 wounded in Kabul suicide bomb attack

Afghanistan: Two suicide bomb attack carried out by Taliban militants in a crowded area near the defence ministry in Kabul, Afghanistan on Monday has left at least 24 people dead and 91 others wounded said a spokesman for the public health ministry, adding that the death toll might rise.

 
The attack comes less than two weeks after a deadly attack was carried out on the American University in Kabul killing 13 people.


There were two blasts in quick succession in a crowded area of the city near government buildings as well as a market and a main intersection said spokesman for the Defence ministry Mohammad Radmanesh.

Soldiers, police officers and civilians who were rushing to help victims of the first blast were caught in the second explosion, triggered when a suicide bomber blew himself up.

The Taliban militants claim responsibility for the attack.
The group have stepped up their fight against the Western-backed Afghan government in recent weeks, after a short following the death of their former leader, Mullah Akhtar Mansour.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack in a statement.
