Garbine Muguruza defeats Serena Williams to claim first Grand Slam title in Paris
French Opens: World number four and rising star, Garbine Muguruza, 22 defeated defending champion and world number one Serena Williams at 2016 French Opens final on Saturday, with an impressive display from both women on Philippe Chatrier.
Garbine defeated Williams 7-5, 6-4 to claim her first Gram Slam title, being the first Spanish woman to win a major title since 1998.
Muguruza took it to William, matching her intensity and heavy-hitting to dictate
play. Williams, who is
fighting an adductor injury, struggled through the game.
It took Murugurza until the fifth game for her to capture the first break of the
match on a double-fault from Williams.
Williams was looking to become the oldest champion at Roland Garros at
the age of 34 and only the fourth player in the Open era to win four or
more titles in the French capital.
"I'm so excited playing a final of a Grand Slam against one of the best players," said Muguruz.
"Serena is a very powerful player, and I tried to fight as much as I can. All the matches I play against her help, that's for sure.
Prior to this contest, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario was Spain's last French Open winner when she defeated Monica Seles in 1998."This is the tournament in Spain, clay and Rafa (Nadal).."
Saturday’s win was Muguruza’s second over Williams in Paris, as she knocked her out of the second round in 2014.
