About 800 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean arrive in Italy
An Italian coast guard said 45 of the illegal migrants had died in a shipwreck on Friday despite their safe arrival.
Migrants influx into Europe from Libya has increase recently due to calm seas and warm weather inspite of efforts to boost border controls which do not seem to deter the migrants.
Many of the migrants don’t know how to swim or have life jackets, and they pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to make the the journey across Libya.
Over 1400 deaths have been reported in the Mediterranean this year according to the International Organization of Migration (IOM)
IOM further stated that in 2014 and 2015, more than 320,000 migrants arrived on Italian shores and an estimated 7,000 died in the Mediterranean as they sought to reach Europe.
The majority of those arriving in Italy so far come from sub-Saharan Africa.
