Tanzania eases visa entry requirements for Nigerian travellers

Tanzania has officially removed Nigerian travellers from its Referred Visa Category, effective September 25, 2026. 

What this means is that Nigerian travellers to Tanzania will no longer require special immigration clearance before applying for visas.

The Tanzania Immigration Services Department announced the change in a notice dated September 25, 2026, signed by its Chief Spokesperson, ACI Paul Mselle, and published on X.

According to the department, the decision followed amendments contained in Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026 and took effect immediately.

Nigerian nationals will now follow Tanzania’s standard visa application process through the official immigration online portal or designated entry points.

Nigerians were previously subjected to the referral system and required to obtain approval from the Commissioner General of Immigration before travelling and were advised to submit their applications at least two months ahead of their intended travel dates.

The removal from the referral category does not make travel to Tanzania visa-free for Nigerian passport holders.

Tanzania’s immigration guidelines allow visa applications through its official online portal or via visa-on-arrival services at designated entry points, although the department recommends applying online before travelling.
